The Xiaomi Redmi 6 was presented, together with the budget version Redmi 6A, on June 12, 2018. The Redmi 6, as a more contemporary version of the Redmi 5, is supposed to claim the low-budget market for itself, and has to offer for it at low price some rich features, like a dual camera and the brand-new Helio P22 processor. What else there is to know about Redmi 6, you will learn in the following.

The Redmi 6 features a compact 5.45 inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels. The pixel density is approx. 295 ppi, which is just under the 300 ppi mark, at which no individual pixels can be seen with the naked eye. Although the image is not as sharp with these specifications as with the higher-priced models, it is impressive. The display also features Multi-Touch.

In terms of design, the Redmi 6 is quite a standard model. The relatively large display edges are striking, resulting in a screen-to-body ratio of approx. 73% in combination with the upper and lower edges. A novelty is that the speaker of the Redmi 6 is no longer at the bottom but on the back. It is available in grey, blue, pink and gold.

The Redmi 6 is powered by the Helio P22 in combination with a PowerVR GE8320 GPU, which celebrates its premiere with this smartphone. It has 8 cores (2 GHz Cortex-A53) and an additional computing unit, an NPU. This NPU is also the reason why we didn’t choose a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor as usual: The new features of Xiaomis MIUI are mainly based on artificial intelligence, for which an NPU is an advantage. The Redmi 6 is available in 3/32 GB and 4/64 GB. A 3000mAh battery supplies the necessary juice.

As usual, Xiaomi uses its own MIUI, more precisely MIUI 9.5 on an Android 8.1 basis. The 9th version of MIUI has proven time and again in the past that fast working is also possible with low-cost smartphones. An upgrade to MIUI 10 is very likely for the Redmi 6.

The dual camera setup consists of a 12MP camera with an f/2.2 aperture and a Sony IMX486 sensor, and another 5MP camera with an f/2.2 aperture. The second camera is only responsible for the depth of field. In addition, the Redmi 6 has phase detection autofocus and an LED flash. The front camera has 5MP and an f/2.2 aperture. For selfie-enthusiasts this is a real highlight, because the above mentioned NPU is used here and brings the AI software into the game. This ensures that the most flattering image settings are made for each image. Other features of the Xiaomi photo software include instant bokeh shots and automatic scene detection.

Unfortunately, the Chinese Redmi 6 does not have LTE band 20, so LTE reception is unlikely to be available in areas outside the city. However, the remaining German frequencies are supported, including the following LTE bands: LTE: B1, B3, B34, B38, B39, B40, B41, B5, B7, B8

The Redmi 6 also features the dual SIM feature (2 nano cards). The phone also features WIFI, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, a fingerprint sensor, Face ID and other standard sensors. A 3.5mm jack connection is available.

Finally, with the Redmi 6, Xiaomi has introduced a new price-performance sensation for the low-budget sector. Although you can’t say how good the Helio P22 is at the moment, but with its NPU it offers the great AI features that other low budgets can only dream of. Another selling point is the compact design, which will appeal to fans of smaller smartphones.
