Doogee S95 Pro modular rugged smartphone

Modular phones are generally not as outstanding in terms of hardware and stuff, but the Doogee S90 is an exception, as it is a modular, expandable phone with quite good hardware. Built on the S90 comes the S95 Pro, which holds the basics but goes even further and becomes a truly punchy device in every respect.

The Doogee S90 is a very durable phone, which is reflected in its appearance, though in a rather sophisticated form and the S95 Pro. The notch (sensor island) is still there. There are three cameras on the back and various extra modules on the back, with a contact on the back.

The Doogee S95 Pro is expected to meet IP69K and MIL-STD-810G standards in the same way, which in practice means that it will not only be continuous under water, but will also withstand high pressure water.

And the MIL-STD-810G is a very strict military standard, and the device has to endure many conditions, such as: immersion in water, vibration, low temperature, high temperature, heat shock, sunlight, rain, mist, ballistic impact, acidic atmosphere sand, port etc. This makes it suitable for many environments.

It is not a completely new idea, but it is very rare to add a phone with modules. But with the Doogee S95 Pro you can.

For the Doogee S90:

  • Night vision camera (not as night vision as you would expect, but allows you to take pretty good pictures in very low light conditions)
  • Power mod: 5000mAh extra battery. Essentially an external battery, but wireless.
    walki-talkie mod
  • Game mod: Adds a gamepad to the phone

These are also expected to be available on the S95 Pro.

The S90 comes with waterproof cameras and is capable of taking relatively high quality images, even under water. However, the S95 Pro already utilizes three rear-facing cameras, with the main camera at 48MP.

Rear-facing cameras: 48MP Main Sensor (Sony IMX586) + Wide Angle + Depth Detection. The camera module can do better in drama, even when it is very dark.

The device is powered by a large 5150mAh battery which can be charged via the Type-C connector. The S90 also supports wireless charging and probably won’t do the same with the S95 Pro.

    Great phone, extremely durable

1 month into owning a Doogee S95 Pro. It's very good, not perfect, but a lot of my gripes with it are software related. Spec-wise it really can't be beat right now, absolutely the best tough phone available. The Mediatek Helio P90 isn't the best processor available right now, but it's more than capable. The AI capabilities of the chip are very well utilized as well, there's a setting you can turn on that will pre-load apps if it detects that your going to load it, so switching between apps is extremely quick, even a slow to load app on Android like Snapchat will load nearly instantly. Software gripes come into play mainly with the camera… The S95 Pro has a fantastic sensor, but it isn't very well utilized with the current camera app, pictures typically look a little washed out and slightly lower quality than you would expect for 48MP. The 8MP wide-angle sensor is terrible as well, it's honestly annoying when it opens and the photos taken with it look like they came from 2007, a massive letdown given the fantastic 48MP sensor the phone also comes with. The 16MP selfie camera is definitely a high point though, great quality with good colors. Battery life is great as well, I've been using it all day and I'm only now at 50% battery, with lower usage it's not unreasonable to be able to get 2 days of use out of it. Even without the magnetic attachments the phone is great, then add to that the ability to magnetically attach mods to the phone it definitely pushes it into amazing. The speaker mod is better than I expected it to be, very loud with decent sound quality. The 3150MaH battery mod is rather useless given the already massive battery, but a welcome addition if you need the extra power or you don't expect to be able to charge the phone for a few days. Plus since I pre-ordered I got a pair of Doogee Dopods, which in my opinion are some of the best, if not THE BEST, truely wireless earbuds on the market currently. Overall, for the $500 price the phone with mods currently goes for, it can't be beat.
