The Chuwi Hi8 SE attracts primarily its low price. However, this gadget is not suitable for everyone.
The Chuwi Hi8 SE tablet PC is regularly found in our headings on budgeting and discounts in Chinese stores. This device can be bought for about $130. But is it worth it? What are the tasks that such a cheap tablet can handle? We tried to answer these questions.
The tablet uses a MediaTek MT8735 processor, which has four processing cores, which operate at a frequency of 1.1 GHz. In combination with the rather powerful graphics core ARM Mali-T720 Graphics, this processor allows you to easily view high-definition video, play modern games, not to mention more simple tasks.
However, not everything is as good as it seems at first glance. The memory subsystem spoils the whole impression. More or less comfortable operation of Android on 2 GB of RAM can still be imagined, but for Windows this is clearly not enough. The same can be said about the amount of permanent memory allocated for storing user data.
The tablet comes in a simple box made of cardboard. At the top of it there is a logo of the company, on the side there is a sticker with a list of the main characteristics of the device. The package includes a charger, a cable with USB Type-C connector, a booklet with background information and a warranty card. Nothing special.
Chuwi Hi8 SE is only available in white color. The case is made of high-quality plastic with barely visible embossing on the back side, on which is located the camera’s eye and the speaker hole. On the right side, the manufacturer placed a power button, a volume control and a microSD card slot. Above there was a place for a USB-C port, a microHDMI connector and a standard 3.5mm headphone hole.
From the device of this price category, you should not expect premium materials or spectacular design solutions. Nevertheless, the Chuwi Hi8 SE does not look defective. The tablet is nice to hold, the frames are thin enough, and the assembly does not cause any complaints. Special thanks to the manufacturer for the fact that there are no prints on the tablet body, so it always looks fresh and neat.
The Chuwi Hi8 SE’s screen is its main advantage. The company Chuwi tries to equip all of its devices with quality matrices. This tablet was no exception. The eight-inch IPS matrix with a resolution of 1920 × 1200 (Full HD) displays a juicy and contrasting picture. The only point concerns the maximum level of brightness. To use the gadget in the bright sun it is clearly not enough, so the best Chuwi Hi8 SE will feel on your bedside table.
Please also note that the Chuwi Hi8 SE display is protected by a regular glass that is not scratch resistant. So do not rush to remove the protective film, which was pasted by the manufacturer. In general, the image on the screen of the tablet leaves a good impression, especially considering the cost of the device.
The Chuwi Hi8 SE runs under two operating systems. For the behavior of the tablet in the Android environment, we had no big fears, since this system treats the memory quite reliably, which in the device is only 2 GB.
But the comfort of using Windows 10 was a big question. But testing showed that Microsoft has put in its system a good margin of safety, so even such harsh conditions were not hers at all.
The operating system interface reacts quite vividly to the user’s actions, the programs are launched, the video plays and the music plays without any problems. For serious programs Chuwi Hi8 SE does not work, but with all the simple tasks (surfing, video, reading, social networking) is doing well.
A non-removable battery of 4,000 mAh is installed in the tablet. Nowadays, when even budget smartphones flaunt more capacious batteries, this is clearly not enough for a tablet. Moreover, the Chuwi Hi8 SE uses a high-resolution screen, which has an additional impact on autonomy.
Test results in different usage scenarios proved once again that it’s better not to go away from the outlet with such a battery. At the start of heavy game applications, the Chuwi Hi8 SE is capable of withstanding up to three hours, which is unlikely to satisfy enthusiastic gamers.
A little better is the case with watching videos and surfing the web. The duration of the tablet in these cases is approximately five hours. Even longer the tablet is held in read mode. Depending on the brightness of the screen, the battery lasts for six hours or even a little longer.
Chuwi Hi8 SE left an ambivalent impression. On the one hand, we liked the screen of the device, its appearance and assembly. And tablet performance, given its cost, can not be called bad.
On the other hand, to ensure a low price, the manufacturer had to make a number of compromises. The tablet is sorely lacking disk space for installing programs and storing data. Advanced users can solve this problem by removing one of the installed operating systems. All the rest will have to be tight.
Another drawback is a weak battery. Because of this, use the Chuwi Hi8 SE only as a bedside device for reading books, watching videos and an evening review of your favorite sites. If you get a tablet with such goals, then you can safely take Chuwi Hi8 SE.
