The DJI Mavic Pro has become the figurehead of the Chinese drone manufacturer and has replaced the Phantom as probably best-known model. Now finally comes a direct successor to the market. On August 23, the drone was officially unveiled in New York. The Mavic 2 will be available in two versions as Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom, and it is available now. Further information will follow soon on China gadgets.
The first thing you notice is the exterior of the drone. Here, the design was slightly changed, but the new drone on the previously surfaced photos is immediately recognizable as Mavic. As before, the arms can be folded, and the size is almost the same as in the previous version. After the smaller Spark, the minor upgrade Mavic Pro Platinum and the Mavic Air, one can now definitely speak of the direct successor of the Mavic Pro.
The gimbal will not be removable this time, however, a service has been promised for the near future, through which you can have the camera of DJI exchange. This is especially interesting as there will be two different cameras with different lenses. Leaks announced that it was a 1-inch Hasselblad camera in the Mavic 2 Pro and a dual optical zoom lens in the Mavic 2 Zoom.
A special feature will be the collision detection called “omnidirectional obstacle sensing”. This should enable the drone to detect obstacles in all directions and avoid collisions. With the automated systems APAS and Active Track 2.0 she will be able to avoid these obstacles independently. Another new feature is called trajectory prediction . It does exactly what it sounds like, and calculates the future position from the movement of a tracked object. So the Mavic 2 is to pursue an object even if it briefly loses eye contact.
The maximum flight time for both models (Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom) is 31 minutes. That would be an upgrade from the Mavic Pro and at a level with the Platinum version. The exact capacity of the battery is not known, but it will be interchangeable again. Instead of the drone and accessories Fly More Combo that was previously available on each drone, there is now a Fly More Kit, in which the accessory package can also be purchased separately from the drone.
The maximum speed of the drone is 45 mph, equivalent to 72 km / h. This is again slightly faster than the Mavic Pro.
To the camera are so far little information known. Videos can be broadcast live in 1080p. The maximum resolution for recordings should probably be 4K, even if that is not confirmed.
It was a big surprise that was announced at the very end of the event. The Mavic 2 is now available on 23.08.2018 and can be purchased via the DJI-Store. Originally, DJI had scheduled the 18th of July as a date for a show event, which was then postponed without giving any reason. Apparently, the time has been used, and so for the first time a new drone at the same time with the official presentation in the sale.
The price was also revealed at the very end. Prices were quoted in US dollars, a look in the German DJI Store reveals that the prices in euros are slightly more expensive. So the Mavic 2 Zoom costs 1249€, the Mavic 2 Pro 1449€. In the US, the Mavic 2 Pro costs $ 1500, which according to the current exchange rate would be more like €1300. Overall, that’s a significant mark-up over the Mavic Pro, which cost $1,200 on release.
It remains to be seen how the price in China and thus in the Chinese online shops will ultimately fail. We expect a lower price again, which should continue to fall over the coming months.
What do you say to the previously known details? Is the Mavic 2 on your shopping list (or at least the wish list)? As you would expect, everything looks pretty good on paper, and the images shown speak for themselves. One wants to clearly refill to remain with the Mavic 2 on the lead in the market for privately used drones. The next few months will show how well that succeeds.
