GPD XD Plus Game Console takes a quantitative step forward from its previous version. The new console based on the Android System renews its graphics power with the MT8176 + Hexa-core PowerVR processor, 4GB RAM and 32GB internal storage to offer a touch screen gaming system capable of integrating Google Play applications and games through its Android 7.0 operating system. The main advantage of this multimedia game console is its portability and integration of the Android system, allowing you to play the entire catalogue on a 5-inch touch screen that is superior to a conventional smartphone with all the convenience of an interface and mapping of buttons and joysticks designed to facilitate a more ergonomic gaming experience. Its small size makes it easy to transport and fits practically in your pocket. In addition, with this operating system and interesting technological conditions, it becomes a perfect multimedia system to be used as a tablet, being able to watch movies and surf with total comfort thanks to the integration of dual-band Wifi.
And with Bluetooth 4.1, it offers great stability and compatibility with many accessories and peripherals, such as headphones and Bluetooth speakers. It is also compatible with the Vulkan engine, further increasing performance in compatible games. The resolution is maintained with respect to the previous model, being able to play and visualize applications in a 720P resolution, a strategic decision to extend the battery life (6000 mAH) and maintain optimal performance of the console that does not spoil the experience. As for the button interface, it has two analog joysticks, a D-Pad and ten game buttons. Finally, it allows you to expand the memory with an SD slot compatible with models up to 128GB. To date, the GPD XD Plus Game Console has become one of the best alternatives for enjoying Google Play games and applications through the Android system, providing greater convenience and a portable screen that will be perfect for killing the dead of day.

I will keep this simple.
Overall Score: 7/10
The Good:
– The display is good.
– Seems to perform well in android gaming.
– Android 7 which gives it good compatibility.
– An option to program physical controls to positions on the touch screen.
– The Bad:
– Seems to get a bit warm while playing Android games, does not seem to cause issues but can potentially increase wear on some internal components.
– Touch screen calibration issue when coming out of sleep mode, have to sometimes reboot the device to temporarily fix that.
How It IS Better Than GPD XD
– Faster CPU with more cores.
– Android 7 which gives it good compatibility than the GPD XD.
– The touch screen collects and clearly displays far less smears from your fingers than the original GPD XD.
– Bluetooth functionality.
– 64 bit architecture improves compatibility with android software. The GPD XD has a 32 bit architecture.
How It Is Worse Than the GPD XD
– Touch screen calibration issue. I know this issue did happen on the GPD XD but it seems to be more pronounced on the GPD XD Plus.
– When testing with a game that does not use a lot of resources on both systems the GPD XD Plus had lower battery life than the GPD XD.
– The version of TWRP for the GPD XD Plus currently has issues accessing sd micro cards.
So, is it worth purchasing?
I would say definitely yes if you desire an android device that has physical controls and you intend to use them as much as possible.
Not if you are aiming to play Android games mostly using the touch screen controls, in that case you are better off with the GPD XD.
If you want a reliable portable system you can actually carry in your pocket without needing to carry along a separate controller and buying a case for it, worth purchasing.
Is it worth upgrading from GPD XD? I would say not really unless games and emulators you want to use work (more) properly on the GPD XD Plus and not on the GPD XD, in that case it is worth the upgrade. If you are one who uses Android software a fair bit I would definitely suggest it for compatibility and a faster CPU but not enthusiastically suggest it for the touch screen calibration problem.
Like the GPD XD the GPD XD Plus' speed is unlocked by installing a custom firmware, at the time I wrote this review CleanRom is/was the custom firmware available for the GPD XD Plus. However, there are rumors that Lineage OS may one day be ported to this system.
