As the successor to the Umidigi Power, the Chinese manufacturer now introduces the Umidigi Power 3 – we don’t know why the second generation was skipped. Nevertheless, the concept and the previously published data of the smartphone sound exciting. We hope that Umi can continue the quality of some previous phones and deliver a solid phone.
This is all you see when you look at Aliexpress’s product page. In addition, according to the promotional email from UMIDIGI, since the product is positioned as “entry-level,” it can be considered to be lower than the UMIDIGI F2, which has been featured several times in the past few days.
As usual from Umidigi, the marketing is very aggressive and as an “ignorant” one might think: “Geil, an iPhone mixed with a Galaxy S10 for the beginner price! But we learned from the past that at Umidigi not everything that glitters is gold.
Nevertheless – a large 6.5 inch display with hole notch for the front camera and full HD resolution in the low price range sounds really good. Whether you like the design is up to you, but I personally find it modern and exciting. The display is supposed to be 6.53 inch and offer a “Full HD+” resolution. In addition, it should have very narrow display edges towards the sides.
As another big feature Umi announces a quad camera for the back. The main sensor is the 48 megapixel Samsung GM1, plus an ultra-wide angle camera with 13 megapixels and two 5 megapixel sensors for macro shots and portraits. On the front there is a 16 megapixel Selfie camera. Although Umidigi got a bit more out of the mostly very good camera hardware on the last few phones, the software has always been the limiting factor even on smartphones with dual cameras. That’s why we’re rather pessimistic if Umidigi now has to adapt software for four sensors plus the sensor on the front. It is questionable whether this will work well and bring added value.
Oh, yeah. Power’s the name of the device. This series wants to shine with especially large batteries and indeed – the Umidigi Power 3 uses a 6150 mAh battery. In my S3 Pro, the battery has always held two days in a row through the bank, so the Power 3 could become a real endurance runner. It’s also positive to note that the battery is charged with 18 watts.
Another highlight of the smartphone is Android 10 out of the box. We think it’s good that Umidigi has equipped his new mobile phone with the latest Android version. So as a buyer you don’t have to worry about an Android update. Nevertheless, Umidigi has to rethink its update policy, because in the past you didn’t receive any updates after one year.
Performance is provided by a Helio P60 processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB memory. The processor was already used in some China mobile phones under $200 and delivers a very decent performance with good system optimization. In practice, the speed can be compared to a Snapdragon 665, as you get it in the new Xiaomi Redmi Note 8.
By the way, the memory can be expanded without having to do without dual SIM (triple slot). In addition, there are many LTE frequencies, so that the Umidigi Power 3 can also be used outside Europe without restrictions. Also included is Bluetooth 5.0, Dual-Band Wifi, a fingerprint sensor on the back, a gyroscope and an e-compass. NFC has also made it into the mobile phone this time.
The Umidigi Power 3 looks really promising from the data sheet. However, we don’t recommend you buy it before publishing our detailed review, as it’s impossible to judge how good the phone really is. We certainly don’t expect any miracles from the camera, but if the smartphone takes good pictures at least in daylight, that would be okay for a mid-range phone. Otherwise we hope for a fast system, a very good battery life and a good workmanship. If all this is given and the price doesn’t exceed $199.99, we are happy to make a recommendation. In a few weeks we will clarify these points in a detailed test report.
